Pedi Stat, together with the Marlins Ballpark Buddies, made one night extra special for an extra special family!

On Thursday,  September 18th the Miami Marlins welcomed two special fans to Marlins Park – Lolly Gonzalez and her 28 year old special needs son, Oscar, who has spent his life on a ventilator and other lifesaving equipment. During their visit they had the opportunity to attend batting practice and got pictures and autographs from Marlins players.  For Lolly, even the anticipation of the event was already part of the fun! “Oscar is so excited about getting autographs, he can’t stop smiling.”

Lolly and Oscar were introduced to the Marlins Foundation by PediStat – the pediatric home medical equipment company that has provided Oscar his life saving equipment, and his mom the training to use the equipment. PediStat organizes special events throughout the year to help relieve some of the stress on families caring for children with complex medical needs.

Thanks to Lolly’s efforts, Oscar was one of the first ventilator dependent children in the State to be treated at home. Lolly also lobbied the state assembly to pass a bill prohibiting the electric company from turning off power to a family with lifesaving equipment because of a late payment. This bill was replicated in many states around the country. Despite all the hardships, Lolly went back to school to study Respiratory Therapy.

Lolly has fought valiantly for the rights of all special needs kids in the State of Florida to be cared for at home. She credits PediStat for helping make that possible.  “I couldn’t have done this without the peace of mind that PediStat gave me, said Lolly. “They are the best!” she proclaimed.

“Lolly represents our true mission,”  says Alison Garfinkel, Director of Clinical Services at PediStat, “When you are released from a hospital with a special needs child it can be overwhelming and we want parents to feel that we are there for them every step of the way. Our motto is ‘We love our kids’  and we are proud to have  earned the trust of special needs families and leading hospitals in South Florida since 1990,” she added.
